ipad Basics - Day 6 Safari and Photo Tips

Our last meeting this semester will review browsing the web and selected photo tips.

As expected, there is an iPadOS 14.5.1 update available. Check your devices
Settings > General > Software Update. Plug into power and it will be quick.

Melissa's 5 page PDF Safari handout is available.

iPad Basics Day 5 - Apple Books, Kindle and Podcasts

Tom is leading us through some of his favorite diversions: books and podcasts.

Paper books v ebooks - time an place for both

Loaning ebooks is not an option

Advocates the native app for the device - except for books .. use Apple Books app and Kindle app because of book technology from publishers.

Libby app allows you to download books from public libraries with your library card.
Some free book resources available online for books that are out-of-copyright.
Formats include ePub, PDF, Kindle, audiobooks

Open Books app > Book Store > Search > user guide > Apple iPad User Guide > Get (“get” because it is free) > approve payment with fingerprint or face id.

Open Books app > Library > shows the books you have downloaded

Renaissance Society Spring Catalog - PDF - can be saved to Apple Books.

Select text on a page then tap Highlight on the popup menu.

Navigating Apple Books app
  • AA button for brightness, font size, page color, Auto-Night theme, Vertical Scrolling (good for reading with bifocal lenses)
  • Search (dictate text as keyword or type keyword or page number) and Bookmark
  • Text on the page - tap on a word > tap Lookup on the pop-up menu
  • Select text of (a location) > tap Search > tap Wikipedia to open article for further research (if you are connected to the Internet)
  • Select text > Highlight or Note on the pop-up menu
  • If the book you are reading has footnotes, or * - tap the symbol to see the footnote details.
  • Go back to Table of Contents - to see Tabs for Bookmarks and Notes - tap to return to the page with typed note or bookmark.
  • Edit or Delete typed notes at the Contents page or in place on the page using the pop-up menu.

To pause your reading - Books remembers where you left off or you can set a bookmark.

Buying a book in the Apple Bookstore
Browse the lists
Search based on recommendations from friends

Online Resources for books

BookBub with daily email with low cost books with direct links to Amazon Kindle or Apple Books. https://bookbub.com to signup

Free books (out-of-copyright) Project Gutenberg https://gutenberg.org Search for Shakespeare to see all
Open Library - open openlibrary.org has free books

Amazon Kindle is both a device and an app - on iPad, download the Kindle app. (Tom has both iPad and Kindle devices. A Kindle uses epaper screen and can read it outdoors. Buy a Kindle book from your Amazon account to your iPad and it is also available on Kindle device. Kindle is a single purpose device - for reading books but not email or browsing the web.)

Tom keeps all appliance user manuals in Apple Books. Download the PDF to Books and then add the title to a new category (Manuals). Browse the web to find the appliance manual > download PDF > Share icon > tap Books to move copy. PDF documents are searchable in Books app.

Library Books are available in Kindle format for app or device.
  • Public Library book checkout with your active library card
  • Overdrive is old app. Libby is current app and works will.
  • Librarians are available to help you use Libby and access books, audiobooks and more!
  • Libby has a ebook reader or download borrowed titles to the Kindle app.
Search for available titles, by author or genre.
Borrow or place hold on the title, read a sample.
A borrowed book is returned in 21 days or you can turn in early.
Set your preferences for books to speed your searches.

Kindle has feature to show underline where other readers have highlighted text.
Audiobooks - are more useful on iPhone - but Libby, Apple Books and Kindle offer audiobooks.
Sample book to see if you want to purchase.

Podcasts - this app has just changed with iPadOS 14.5 and iOS 14.5.
  • Syncs between iPad and iPhone
  • Recommendations from friends are often the best way to find podcasts.
  • Most podcasts are free (ad supported), soon premium content will charge and not … have ads
  • Subscribe to podcast > tap +
  • Set option for how many episodes to download and keep on your device.
  • Public Radio has many titles - This American Life, Wait Wait, Don’t Tell Me, TED Radio Hour, etc.

Best to download episodes over wifi before taking device out on a walk or road trip. Can use cellular data to listen to podcasts without downloading but this counts against your cellular data use.

Check for storage space taken up by Podcast episodes

Settings > General > ipad Storage > scroll to Podcasts > tap Podcasts > view list of downloaded episodes > swipe a title right-to-left to Delete. You are still subscribed to the Podcast.

Contributions from Chat
  • Lynn: Netgalley gives you free books before they are published. They just ask that you give a review. https://www.netgalley.com
  • Barbara & Jennifer: In Libby, when the book you put on hold is available, you can delay your checkout if you’re not quite ready. You get to pick how long you want to delay getting the book.

iPad Basics Day 4 - Maps, Messages, Notes

Jennifer - Maps and Messages

Here are my notes:

Maps and Messages for iPad

Look at Maps with your iPad in Landscape view position. Look at Maps with your iPad in Portrait view position. (If the Lock Display in Control Center is off the iPad will rotate views.) Buttons, labels and panels will move around. Touch every button!

Most of us use our iPhones mainly for Maps, but don’t ignore the Maps app on your iPad. It’s better for planning than your phone, because of the bigger canvas. Play around, explore and practice and you’ll be adept for our normal future of real travel.

First, open Maps in Settings. You want to have Location turned on, either While Using the App (older iPad) or While Using the App or Widgets. You also want to have Precise Location turned on so you get good directions.

Open Maps. You can use it in either landscape or portrait mode. Your current location will be slightly right of the center of the map, a blue pulsing circle. If it’s not (or to return at any time to your location), click on the pointed arrow at the top right.

At the bottom right is the temperature and the Air Quality Index.

Tap the i with a circle around it at the top right. You can choose map settings: Map, Transit or Satellite. Traffic or not. With traffic on, when you look at the map, especially when planning a trip or route, on highways and streets you will see slowdowns in red, accidents, road construction and lane closures.

The top of the map is North by default. If you move around your map so it is not, a round compass will appear under the arrow. Tap on the compass to get North back on the top.

Use your two fingers to move around and drag the map. To zoom in or out, pinch in or out. It will show the scale along the top as you zoom. You can zoom really far out and see the entire country or even the whole world. To get back to your location, tap the arrow again.

Turn on Satellite and you will see 3D by the arrow. Tap on that. Rotate and move with your fingers to get closeup 3D looks. Use two fingers and rock up and down. Tap 2D to go back.

For directions, tap in the search bar at the top left and type the city or place where you want to go. The map will show it and offer you directions.  It tells you how many miles it is and gives estimated travel times if you were going right now. Just below are details about the place and you can add it to your Favorites. You can find your Favorites just under the search bar.

It often will give you several route choices, its preferred one in bright blue. Just tap on a light blue route if you want to consider that. You can also choose to have a route that avoids tolls and/or highways.

Be sure your home address is in your Contacts and is labeled as your home. Then when you want directions from some place to your home, the map app immediately knows where to go!

There are lots of things you can have fun searching for for: landmarks, parks, beaches, places you might want to visit, addresses or towns where you lived a long time ago, old addresses of your parents or even grandparents.

When you search for a place especially a city, notice if it has a City Tour or Flyover. In some cities or places you will see a binocular symbol. Tap on that to get 360-degree views of a street or attraction.

New: There are guides from what Apple calls trusted brands and partners in this country and around the world. Just type Guides in the search bar at home or when you’re somewhere else or have open a different place where you want to go on a trip. You’ll get some choices of various attractions in that area. You can save them. Tap on a pick, then tap on Save Guide. You can also share these guides.

iMessages: Fun with Texting

You can text on your iPad not only with words, but also photos, videos, music and more. And you can have a lot of fun—and impress your grandchildren! Practice with a friend or relative. You can also send messages to yourself to practice.

There are two kinds of texting: iMessages are with another iPhone or iPad or Mac; you will see a blue message bubble. If you are texting with someone on another kind of phone, those are SMS and you will see a green bubble. If texting to a group and one person is non-Apple, it will be green.

Blue texts are free and can be sent and received on your iPad. Everything you send or receive is encrypted. That means it is totally safe and no one but your recipient can see it. But green ones use your phone’s texting minutes (but most plans are unlimited these days) and are NOT encrypted. To use iMessage, turn it on in iPhone and iPad in Settings > Messages.

Remember your phone is controlling most text messages, particularly the green ones and you have to change some settings on your phone so green messages will go onto your iPad.

To get Green messages to show up on your iPad, in phone Settings > Messages, tap on Send and Receive Settings and add your emails and your phone number. Go down to Text Message Forwarding and list the devices you want to have send and receive green text messages i.e., iPad and also Mac. You also want to turn on Send as SMS.

Now back to your iPad:

You will notice in Messages, your previous messages are on the left and your most current one on the right (different than your phone). To send a message, open Messages and tap on the blue circle with the “pen” in the upper right. Enter a phone number or name. Or click on the blue circle with a plus and it will go to Contacts. Once you have one person, you can add more to this message with the blue plus sign. Once you have one person or a group, you can type or dictate a message in the box below and hit the blue or green arrow to send it.  If all your group members are on iPhones, no problem. If even one is not, the group might not work.

For a Quick Tapback to respond to a message, either double-tap or hold a message and get your choice of gray emojis (heart, thumbs up or down, etc.) above the message. Tap one and it goes.

You can send an audio message. Tap on the gray circle in the message place. If you start typing instead, that gray box will turn into the blue send arrow.

SPECIAL EFFECTS in iMessage. Practice these!!!

Quick and Easy: If you type one of these three common messages in the box, it will be sent with special effects: Happy Birthday (balloons), Congratulations or Congrats (confetti) and Happy New Year (fireworks).

Send with Effect: To see these, you must first write your message (or even part of it). Then the mic in the message bubble will turn into a blue arrow. Press firmly on the blue arrow. NOTE: a quick tap will just send the message; you want to hold it down until you get the screen that says Send with effect.

  1. The Bubble screen gives you four choices to change how your message is received: Slam, Loud, Gentle and Invisible Ink. Try these out!
  2. The Screen screen gives you nine choices of special effects to go with your message (most have sound effects, too): Echo, Spotlight, Balloons, Confetti, Inflating Heart, Lasers, Fireworks, Shooting Star and Celebration. Try all of these. They are fun and recipients love them!

Photos. To the left of the iMessage space, slide over to the Camera. You can take a new picture. To use a current photo, look for the photo app icon down below. Also down below you will find various apps with things you can add to messages:

1. #images gives you tons of funny GIFs (tiny movies). You can search to get ones on specific topics (birthday, etc.) or featuring someone or something (Star Trek, Spongebob, snakes, cats, etc.).

2. Music. If you have music on your phone, it will give you some of your recently played songs. You can send them.

3. YouTube. You can send these in your messages.

Practice all of these with a relative or friend. They are great for birthdays and other special occasions.

How to delete messages: To delete an entire conversation with one or more contacts, swipe left and tap on the trash can (this is different than on your phone). To delete just one or more individual messages, press down on the message itself. You will see More… in a bottom bubble. Tap that and you can then check any messages you don’t want and hit Delete All in the top left.

Pinning people/groups. This is new in iOS14 and lets you keep your more important or frequent people at the top of the message list. You can only pin nine conversations (individuals or groups). Press down on a message from the individual or group you wish to pin and you’ll see the pin option. To remove one from the top, press down on their icon and you’ll see unpin.

Notes is a great place to draft email messages. In Notes you can save your list of participants with email addresses. First, create a Note page with the first line (as a headline) that you want as the Subject Line of your emails. (Book Club - Spring 2021) Add two Returns and then begin typing the draft email message. At the bottom of your message add all the email addresses you'll copy to the BCC field of your message. Review everything and send when ready.

Not included in today's announcement is we can expect iPad OS 14.5 and iOS 14.5 to be rolled out next week.  Mashable offers this review Apple will release iOS 14.5 next week. Download it for these new features

What we are excited about ...
Tom mentioned that an iMac is a shared device and an iPad/iPhone is a personal device.

Want to see Apple improve a feature in Photos, or another native app?
Visit Product Feedback and choose the hardware, iOS and iPadOS Apps, macOS, iCloud, Services and Wallet.
  • My pet peeve is how Photos does not let end users control how our Albums are listed. There are some ways to Search for photos but Apple could have a better way for us to show albums in alphabetical order, or most recent changes.

We hear you ... Recording and Chrome

Remember the website tour on Day 1? Be sure and check back regularly for updates to this site.

Jennifer was successful in recording Ken Spencer's presentation for Day 2. Due to limitations on this site, one third of the recording was posted at one time. The first third was available for two weeks on Melissa's post about Ken's talk. The second third was available earlier this week and the final third has now been posted.  Recordings will not be made of our other sessions due to privacy concerns.

Someone asked about the Chrome browser and in his leisure time, Tom found an article worth your attention "Why You Should Never Use Google Chrome On Your iPhone, iPad Or Mac
Millions of users warned to stop using Chrome after "hidden" and "creepy" new tracking begins..." and you will find the link on our Questions and Paths to Answers page. Even if you are not a user of Chrome you will learn more about data harvesting, cookies, tracking, and more. You do not need to understand this article, it can be the beginning of your journey.

iPad Basics - Passwords & iPad Hints - Day 2

This is part three of Ken's presentation.

Guest speaker Ken Spencer on Passwords and Security

Ken Spencer, President of MacNexus Apple Group

  • Use 2-factor authentication when prompted
  • Passwords - major headache & stumbling block
  • Convenient vs Secure passwords - what can we remember
  • iCloud for secure passwords synced for all Apple devices = iCloud Keychain
  • Passwords are KEYS to individual websites or accounts

Do not go into Keychain to edit password - go to the website to update pw then Keychain will prompt to save updated password.

Best Practice: After updating password > log out of the website > log in to the website and enter new pw. Success? Now you know it worked and saved to iCloud Keychain.

Biometerics - fingerprint ID or face ID - for fill-in password = pw are ultra secure.

Passwords - 8 characters, 1 upper/lower case, repeated letter/number 2X; number. Use 8-10 characters. Words not found in a dictionary.

Don’t use the same pw everywhere. Email address is often username to accounts. PW for email should not be used anywhere else.

Ken’s SmashWords plan has a personal word-stem with a three-letter prefix for each account. For example:

sacto1

Xxxsacto1

American Airlines > Amesacto1

Amazon = Amasacto1

Netflix = Netsacto1

Wells Fargo = Welsacto1!   << special character on financial & email

Use same special character on all accounts ! or $ or #

As you begin accessing accounts > then change pw with a new protocol.  Apple iCloud Keychain will propose secure passwords. Use suggested or use a modified version of Ken's SmashWords example.

Don’t write down pw. If you do, underline the capital letter and indicate date changed.

Password = alphanumeric combination with 8 or more characters

Passcode = numeric sequence to unlock your device

Notes app can lock a Note page with a pw. Unlock using device biometrics passcode (finger or face)

    • Note can be locked on iPad/iPhone. Lock a Note then can see prompt to unlock when viewing from web browser at https://icloud.com  (Good for Windows computer users.)

Practice locking a new Note page (link to online User Guide):

Open Notes app - new note page to keep pw “Here are my passwords” [ is the top line in the new Note ]

Password! [ or some text is the second line in the new Note ]

(…) > Lock Note [ look for a button ( ... ) in the top right of the screen ]

Use same passcode as used to unlock device

iCloud for Windows? Go to https://icloud.com > log in with your Apple ID > open Notes > look on the list of Notes for a paddlelock icon > click that Note and type passcode at prompt.

iPad uses 4-6 digits to unlock as PASSCODE or fingerprint ID / face ID

Settings > Touch ID and Passcode > Change Passcode > now 6 digits > Passcode options > … screenshot

Fingerprint ID - can be same finger several times - touch in this view of Settings to see highlight - doing this gives fingerprint sensor new scans to add more info to the biometrics. Hopefully, this will help your iPad unlock from your fingerprint more often.

3rd Party Password apps or services available to keep and use passwords. Ken uses iCloud Keychain.

Settings > iCloud accounts > Notes ON

Settings > Notes > default account iCloud

Turn off “On my iPad” - but make sure you have moved Notes stored there to iCloud.

Passwords are stored on iPad and sent as encrypted info to iCloud then also sent to other Apple devices as encrypted info.

    Practice

Siri > “Show me my Allstate password”

    Settings > Passwords > Allstate

Settings > Safari > General > Auto Fill for websites and credit cards

Name the card the Card - ExpDate

If prompted for Apple ID password - be sure your device is on the Internet. Wait a minute or so. You will be prompted as

    iPad > open Safari > Address Bar > help.apple.com /ipad > tap Go button

    iPad User Guide opens up

Share button > Add to Home Screen > edit to make name short name > tap Add button

    • After all accounts closed do survivors need to notify about death
    • Credit cards will expire - might need to redeem points before expire

Location & Safety - OK to let app know location because cellphones ping towers anyway.

Chrome Browser - slows down your Mac computer

    http://chromeisbad.com

Google Chrome to read email - using browser on PC to read email is better than on Mac computer.
