Sorting photo albums alphabetically	This works well on a Mac laptop or desktop computer. On the iPad and iPhone the albums are listed by the latest change. On iPad you can drag the albums to a new order but it won’t last long.
Beware of email and text scams	Tis the season for online purchases and it is a good idea to keep track of your purchases-vendor-delivery date-price. Notes is a convenient way to track purchases. Be safe!

AppleID	We each have our own iPhones but on our computer we share one login and an AppleID. Some websites are confused now and do not allow us to see each account. We might need to create a new AppleID but still share one Mac computer.  -- On a Mac computer you can have two (or more) logins and quickly switch between them. (OnePassword is in use. Apple Keychain could be used for the new account.) That way the Mail app can access individual Gmail accounts, etc. This is a good reason to call Apple Support. Or consider joining MacNexus and using one of the member consultants to separate out your data. PREPARE for these calls by keeping notes on the problematic accounts.
Family Sharing	Is a way to combine family purchases up to 6 household members for iPhone, iPad and Mac computers.

OK to update to iOS 15 and iPadOS 15. 

Accessibility	For vision, hearing, touch. If Home button - add available fingers for Touch ID. Touch > Shake to Undo on iPhone. Back Tap > Double/Triple for access to needed feature on iPhone (might not work with a heavy case).

Fun with YouTube

YouTube is owned by Google. The app is available for iPhone, iPad, also Apple TV, iMessages, and you can also watch on computer (youtube.com).

The app is free, but you can upgrade to YouTube Premium so you get no ads for $15.99 a month. I don’t do that as I think that’s a bit much. But the ads are getting more annoying, formerly one per video, now two and sometimes three per video. But you can usually skip parts of the ads.

There is potentially a lot of data linked to you. Most of that is related to upgrading to Premium. It suggests in the app store that you can Subscribe to channels, but they don’t really ever say you need a gmail account to do that. But it seems you do. I have had a gmail account for many years so it hasn’t been an issue for me. You could just create a gmail account and use it if you want to Subscribe to channels or save videos to Favorites and Watch Later in the Library. 

YouTube can be a lot of fun. There are a lot of interesting and entertaining things there. But of course there’s lots of trash, too! If you watch a lot of YT, which I do, you will find It gets to know you and gives you viewing suggestions based on what you’ve watched. YT is also a great source for videos to use if you are doing a presentation for Renaissance or anyone else, either on Zoom or in a classroom-type situation. You can get videos showing you how to do household tasks and jobs. And it’s fun to send amusing or interesting YTs to your friends and family. It’s easy to do in Mail or Messages.

The app is the red rectangle with the “play” arrow in the center. On the Home Page, notice at the top there are four things. At left it wants you to play YT on other devices, like your Apple TV.  Next it wants to you turn on notifications (optional). Next is the important Search icon. On the right is your account.

At the bottom are navigations. At left is the home page, next a link to what they consider cut shorts, next is the plus with some advanced options (ignore that). Next are Subscription and on the right is the Library. 

I’m going to tell you how to save individual videos to either the Watch Later or Favorites parts of the Library. And I’m going to tell you how to find and subscribe to five channels, the PBS NewsHour, two Renaissance channels and two Apple channels. 

First use the Search symbol to look for anything. You can just tap on it and it will play. On a phone, it will automatically turn sideways for best viewing (make sure you don’t have the lock screen on in the Control Center). Keep it vertical and look at your choices right under the video. You can share it (email or text it to someone). The download option invites you to get a free trial for a $15.99 membership. To the right is Save. Tap easy and it will automatically go to the Watch Later list. Tap hard and you get the option to two lists, Watch Later or Favorites. They are not really different. But either one is a good place to save a video you want to watch later or keep for some time. You can find things you save in Watch Later or Favorites in the Library (bottom right icon).

Also right below the video it says in red Subscribe and gives the name of the Channel on the left. There are lots and lots of channels, many with thousands or millions of subscribers.

On iPhone or iPad, to get back to the home page, click  in the upper left of the video on the tiny V. Back on the home page you can get rid of a video you just played by clicking on the X.

So I am now going to tell you how to subscribe. First will be the PBS Newshour channel. This is a really good way to watch the Newshour. You can watch it at any time each day after about 3  or 4 p.m. You don’t have to wait for a fixed time on a regular PBS TV channel. And the PBS app for Apple TV or also your devices is REALLY slow in loading the NewsHour.

Next are the two Renaissance channels. First is the Forum channel, which has the recordings of all Forums since fall of 2020 (search for Renaissance Society Forums). The second is the Renaissance Café channel, which has a whole bunch of really interesting one-time Zoom recordings from the past year. 

Next there are two useful Apple channels, Apple and Apple support.

For any of those, do a search (loupe symbol in top right) for them. Then click on their names that come up and then click on the red Subscribe. If you wish to be notified of new videos in your channels, click on the bell icon near the word Subscribed for each channel.

You can delete these channels, as well as the Watch Later and Favorites at any time. For Watch Later and Favorites in the Library, just swipe to the left and you’ll see Remove in red. For the channels (aka subscriptions), just tap on the gray word Subscribed at the top left of the channel. 

Books and Podcasts

Books

A library card number and a pin are needed to obtain a Libby App at the public library. With the Libby App you can borrow books and manage the loans. You may read the book on the Libby App or the Kindle App. To choose between the two apps, mark your choice in Libby’s settings under “read books with”. In Libby you can borrow the audio version by looking at Format, note the earphones under the book image.  You may attach a listening device and use the audio controls.

With Apple’s Book App you may purchase books from the Book Store. When reading a book in the Book App you have options: change colors, adjust scroll, lookup word meaning and location, adjust font, bookmark page, search for word, and highlight area.

Gutenberg Project provides free copies of books that are out of print.

BookBub is a free service that provides a list of books to its subscribers that they may wish to read.

Podcasts

Podcast App is provided by Apple. You may subscribe to future episodes. Some podcasts are free and some are not. You may establish your own library with your subscriptions, search for more podcasts, and control various aspects of the audio. The eclipse with the three dots allows you to manage your episodes and subscriptions. 

Protecting Your Devices

Tom reviewed several ways to protect your devices and questions were answered before and after class.

Search field	Search field in Mail and other apps is often hidden. Use the brush down gesture to reveal it. Try this in Mail and in Settings, then other apps.
Photos - list of Albums	Sort order of Photo Albums > use Search instead. Album order does not sync between computer and mobile devices. You can spend lots of time dragging Albums into alphabetical order or any order - but adding a new album will return chaos. Search is your friend!
Mistyped words	Auto Correct Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement
Typing special characters	Type accent characters - Hold down on a key to see the many options; also other characters $¢ 0º
Correct Junk Mail on a specific sender	How to get Sac Bee email to not show up in Junk folder? - Wait for it. Research needed.
Protect your device	Get a case for your iPhone - check the online Apple Store, Best Buy and Amazon
Protect your device	Microfiber cloth to clean glass screen - eyeglasses cleaning cloth also
Protect your device	Did your iPhone take a dunk? It is water resistant … switch off, then shake to remove water; open SIM tray to allow cavity to dry out; don’t use rice or a hair dryer;

Play with the Calendar app and see what you can do by touching every button. Remember Carol has mentioned the [ + ] plus button is often a key to something great. Actually, there are many hidden buttons on your iPhone and iPad. So touch everywhere. 

The native Apple apps are designed to work together, often behind the scenes. And, that is where the magic begins. 

The Calendar app is a key hub for many other Apple apps and ... so it can be intimidating. The functions are the same on iPad and iPhone but the user interface is different do to smaller screen real estate. One trick you will appreciate is rotating your iPhone to landscape mode to see the Week View! Play with Calendar to increase your productivity. Add a location so the Maps app can calculate travel time and give you turn-by-turn directions. Invite someone to the event so it will appear on their Apple device too. 

Play? How about starting with Siri - your personal assistant - and asking 'her' to create an event. Then review the event and make additions and changes. Actually Siri can do all-of-the-above for you. More practice needed.

Contacts	On iPad, iPhone and at www.icloud.com - the best of all worlds when you sync Contacts to all your devices based on one Apple ID.
Contacts for individuals	To take the best advantage of this small computer, make individual Contact Cards. The wife is one card. The spouse is a different card. There are ways to link the two cards. But Siri can only offer support for one individual. “Siri - Call my sister Sue” works because Sue has her own card, I have my card with associated links to all my sisters.
Settings for Contacts	Siri & Search - all on; Sort Order and Display Order, My Info > your Contact Card
Create new	[ + ] to add a new contact card, fill out the fields - click Done to finish
Make individual Contact Cards	Siri can call individuals but not reach into the Notes area for a secondary phone call
Make your Contact Card	Siri and other apps will use this contact info. Add your photo to the card. Add linked contacts (“Call my son” or “Call my sister Sue”)
Identify your card for devices	Settings > Contacts > My Info … for auto fill forms, ask Siri to “Take me home” and to share info with others.

Misbehaving apps	Reboot (turn off and on) or do a Hard Reboot that clears cache.
Silence Unknown Callers (SUC)	Keeps spammers away but what about when you have a service appointment and an unknown number will call with arrival time? You might need to turn off SUC. Can Siri do this? Can Siri create a Reminder to open this Setting to turn it on again. Also, The Shortcuts app can open Settings to this feature but Shortcuts is an advanced topic. Apple Tips app	Tips app refreshes often to include brief helpful suggestions. You might have deleted this app or it is hidden on a distant galaxy (Home Screen) far far away. If the Tips is a widget on your iPhone and iPad then there is a “tech minute of zen” on the Home Screen.
