Protecting Your Devices

Tom reviewed several ways to protect your devices and questions were answered before and after class.

Search field

Search field in Mail and other apps is often hidden. Use the brush down gesture to reveal it. Try this in Mail and in Settings, then other apps. 

Photos - list of Albums

Sort order of Photo Albums > use Search instead. Album order does not sync between computer and mobile devices. You can spend lots of time dragging Albums into alphabetical order or any order - but adding a new album will return chaos. Search is your friend! 

Mistyped words

Auto Correct Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement 

Typing special characters

Type accent characters - Hold down on a key to see the many options; also other characters $¢ 0º

Correct Junk Mail on a specific sender

How to get Sac Bee email to not show up in Junk folder? - Wait for it. Research needed. 

Protect your device

Get a case for your iPhone - check the online Apple Store, Best Buy and Amazon

Microfiber cloth to clean glass screen - eyeglasses cleaning cloth also

Did your iPhone take a dunk? It is water resistant … switch off, then shake to remove water; open SIM tray to allow cavity to dry out; don’t use rice or a hair dryer;

iPhone Lightning port can get dust inside gently use wood toothpick or can of compressed air to blow air into port; clean Lightning connectors with microfiber cloth

Apple Support

Tips app - has Collections; rotating content. You might have hidden this app from your main Home Screens. Try Spotlight Search or the App Library to confirm it is not on your devices. This app is free, from Apple.

Lost - Stolen 

If your iPhone or iPad is lost or stolen article on Apple website, also Use the Find My app to locate a missing device or item (AirTags)

Find My app for people or devices; Play Sound; works with Family Sharing

Log into iCloud.com and use Find My there - from any computer

Find My CAR

If you connect to your BlueTooth service - open Maps to see a reference (unless you drive a Tesla, then open that app)

Website - Safari

Save websites for easy access; Share button > Bookmarks, Favorites, Save to Home Screen, Add to Reading List

Website - other browsers

Firefox and Chrome (and others) are available. Chances are they do not integrate with the Apple ecosystem or iOS

Good for temporary sites for quick access to read later … Share > Add to Notes

Look for the open book icon for Bookmarks, eyeglasses icon for Reading List and clock icon for History (with also search)

Libby app - for print books and audiobooks; is a portal to your local public library; needs a current library card and PIN number;
