iPad Basics - Passwords & iPad Hints - Day 2

This is part three of Ken's presentation.

• Use 2-factor authentication when prompted 
• Passwords - major headache & stumbling block 
• Convenient vs Secure passwords - what can we remember 
• iCloud for secure passwords synced for all Apple devices = iCloud Keychain 
• Passwords are KEYS to individual websites or accounts 

Do not go into Keychain to edit password - go to the website to update pw then Keychain will prompt to save updated password. 

Best Practice: After updating password > log out of the website > log in to the website and enter new pw. Success? Now you know it worked and saved to iCloud Keychain.

Biometerics - fingerprint ID or face ID - for fill-in password = pw are ultra secure.

Passwords - 8 characters, 1 upper/lower case, repeated letter/number 2X; number. Use 8-10 characters. Words not found in a dictionary. 

Don’t use the same pw everywhere. Email address is often username to accounts. PW for email should not be used anywhere else. 

Ken’s SmashWords plan has a personal word-stem with a three-letter prefix for each account. For example:

sacto1

Xxxsacto1 

American Airlines > Amesacto1 

Amazon = Amasacto1

Netflix = Netsacto1 

Wells Fargo = Welsacto1!   << special character on financial & email 

Use same special character on all accounts ! or $ or # 

As you begin accessing accounts > then change pw with a new protocol.  Apple iCloud Keychain will propose secure passwords. Use suggested or use a modified version of Ken's SmashWords example. 

Don’t write down pw. If you do, underline the capital letter and indicate date changed. 

Password = alphanumeric combination with 8 or more characters

Passcode = numeric sequence to unlock your device 

Notes app can lock a Note page with a pw. Unlock using device biometrics passcode (finger or face)

• Note can be locked on iPad/iPhone. Lock a Note then can see prompt to unlock when viewing from web browser at https://icloud.com  (Good for Windows computer users.) 

Practice locking a new Note page (link to online User Guide): 

Open Notes app - new note page to keep pw “Here are my passwords” [ is the top line in the new Note ]

Password! [ or some text is the second line in the new Note ]

(…) > Lock Note [ look for a button ( ... ) in the top right of the screen ]

Use same passcode as used to unlock device 

iCloud for Windows? Go to https://icloud.com > log in with your Apple ID > open Notes > look on the list of Notes for a paddlelock icon > click that Note and type passcode at prompt. 

iPad uses 4-6 digits to unlock as PASSCODE or fingerprint ID / face ID 

Settings > Touch ID and Passcode > Change Passcode > now 6 digits > Passcode options > … screenshot 

Fingerprint ID - can be same finger several times - touch in this view of Settings to see highlight - doing this gives fingerprint sensor new scans to add more info to the biometrics. Hopefully, this will help your iPad unlock from your fingerprint more often.  

3rd Party Password apps or services available to keep and use passwords. Ken uses iCloud Keychain. 

Settings > iCloud accounts > Notes ON 

Settings > Notes > default account iCloud 

Turn off “On my iPad” - but make sure you have moved Notes stored there to iCloud.

Passwords are stored on iPad and sent as encrypted info to iCloud then also sent to other Apple devices as encrypted info. 

Practice 

Siri > “Show me my Allstate password” 

Settings > Passwords > Allstate 

Settings > Safari > General > Auto Fill for websites and credit cards 

Name the card the Card - ExpDate 

If prompted for Apple ID password - be sure your device is on the Internet. Wait a minute or so. You will be prompted as 

iPad > open Safari > Address Bar > help.apple.com /ipad > tap Go button

iPad Basics - Meet & Greet

March 24th is the optional Meet & Greet session at 10 am.  It’s an opportunity to see if you can log in to Zoom and test your audio and video. It should take less than an hour. 

Thank you for your interest in our iPad basics class! We meet on Wednesdays at 10:00 to 11:45 am. PDT The actual classes will begin on March 31. And meet weekly until May 5th. 

Attend our meetings using a computer if one is available. That way you can participate and watch our demonstrations and use your iPad at the same time. 

Our team has worked out a lot of the 'kinks' associated with Zooming, but we are still learning every week.  We cover a lot of things that were covered in the iPhone basics class and things that are uniquely different on your iPad.

TYPING ON IPAD IN PAGES - is difficult . Consider getting a Bluetooth keyboard or Apple Magic Keyboard as external device works for iPad and Mac computer. Keyboard folios and cases are specific to each model! (If you know someone who purchased a Mac computer, they may have upgraded to a full-sized keyboard and might trade a $25 gift card for the rechargeable magic keyboard. Good request to make if you are a member of the local Apple Support Group - MacNexus. ) You will want to explore topics by searching the Internet or searching YouTube. For example, go to http://youtube.com and in the search bar type "apple pages on ipad" - this search limits the 'hits' to the apple pages app and limits the hits even further to ipad videos because Pages is available on Mac computers too. Read the description of the video and comments to see what is covered and responses from the creator. 

I AM A VISUAL LEARNER - besides this class, you want to explore YouTube video tutorials. 

PAGES HELP PLEASE - how to insert photos to a Pages document and how to add new pages to a Pages document (crazy...).  This is a great question to pose with a Google Search or YouTube Search. But wait, there's more ... in Apple Books search for the Pages User Guide or view/search/read the online version.

iPhone Day 6 - Siri

Thanks to Barbara and Tom for taking notes today. 

Renaissance iPhone Seminar Notes 03/17/21

Tom discussed Fall class 2021 will have a different format.  Each class will have a theme (scenario) or two. Eg: using your iPhone when walking, using your iPhone when cooking, using your iPhone when gardening. A current class member indicated interest in an Apple Watch class and Tom suggested that watch applications could be included.

SIRI & DICTATION - The things you can do without typing. And works on iPad too! 

According to Wikipedia - Siri is a speech recognition and intelligent personal assistant application developed by Apple Inc. for its mobile and computer platforms.

Siri helps bypass the (tiny) keyboard, prevents typing errors

2 forms:  voice/voice response and textural form

Tom reviewed how to set up. Settings > Siri & Search > toggle it ON.  The first time you will be asked to say various statements so Siri can learn your voice. Toggle on Press Side Button or Home Button for Siri (depending on your model). Toggle on Allow Siri When Locked.

Siri is a computer service that translates/interprets the sounds (words, commands) that you input. You can ask things in different ways (Will it rain tomorrow? Will I need an umbrella tomorrow?) and the Siri will interpret your request and report back. 

Siri works only when you are connected to the internet.

Tom's ten-page list of things Siri Commands & Questions will help you with and suggested some as follows: set an alarm or timer, open a rarely used app from the app library, make phone calls, reminders, location based commands (when I get home remind me to  ____, when I leave this place ask "How long until I get to home?"), open Maps (give me directions to the nearest _____), invoke Siri to send a Message to _____ . 

So, don’t be embarrassed to talk to your phone in public. If dictation is not working be sure Enable Dictation is toggled on.  Settings > General > Keyboard > Enable Dictation. 

Privacy issues: none; info transmitted is encrypted.

Productivity: Tom showed a calendar example of an upcoming museum program. He used Siri’s contextual awareness in the event to bring up options: create event, create reminder, calendar, copy event. We will delve deeper into productivity in the upcoming iPad class - “meet and greet” next Wednesday.

PS The Pocket-lint website has 61 funny things to ask Siri for a good giggle or you can invoke Siri and just say ... repeatedly "Tell me a joke."

General tips for taking pictures: 

• Don't use digital zoom - use 0.5X, 1X and 2X settings when available. 
• Don't use flash - it is not strong enough to help make good photos
• Tap the screen to set focus
• Tap then move finger up or down on the glass to adjust exposure
• Photos are stored on your device and up in iCloud - you still need a device backup

iPhone Basics Day 4 - Phone, Messages & Contacts

Highlights of Tom's presentation today.  

1. ... but before you dig in, Create a Medical ID in the Health app and practice how to find the Emergency info on Home Screen for EMS. Don't unlock your phone with fingerprint, passcode or face id to see options. 
2. Play Telephone with two or more friends. Practice the features mentioned below.  If you don't have two iPhone friends, send the messages to yourself. Also, search YouTube for answers. 
3. Turn on Do Not Disturb to send calls automatically to voicemail. Open Control Center and touch and hold the half moon icon to see options.

iPhone best kept secret is that it can make phone calls!

(Previous iPhones can drop the cellular service but continue to use WiFi as iPhone Touch.)

Phone app 
iOS14 incoming calls arrive as a banner at the top of the screen instead of taking over the whole screen. Want calls to show on the entire screen. Settings > Phone > Incoming Calls > Full Screen.

• Answer a call > tap Accept (green button)
• Many buttons on screen for Mute, Keypad, Speaker, Add Call, FaceTime, Contacts.
• Conference call - Add Call opens Contacts to add a number.
• Top left corner of screen is a green button with current calling time indicated. Tap the green button to return to phone call screen.

Don't want to answer a call? Two options: 

• Click the side power button silences ringer and sends call to voice mail.
• Tap Decline red button to send directly to voice mail.

Unknown Callers - Settings > Phone > Silence Unknown Callers > On 

All calls that are not in Contacts go immediately to voicemail. When you are expecting a phone call from an unknown number then turn this off temporarily so all calls ring through. Plus - slide the Ring Switch button on the side of your phone to black. 

Blocked Callers - add numbers to this list from the Phone app. Tap Recents to open this view. Tap the ( i ) on the right side of a number > scroll down the screen and tap Block this caller. The list is text and will not take up lots of space on your devices. See the list at Settings > Phone > Blocked Calls. When you change the status of a number from "blocked" you can swipe right to left on the number > Unblock. Or you can tap the > for a number and Create a New Contact. 

Manage phone ringtones Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtones; use Contacts to set individual ringtones. 

Text message when not answering calls 

Settings > Phone > Respond with Text. Has three default messages or type your own to customize a message. 

FaceTime calls with multiple phone numbers. Group Message > tap faces > 3 options for combined audio call, FaceTime call and Info. Up to 32 callers can be on FaceTime. 

FaceTime app will show some names listed in Contacts

Settings > Phone > Allow calls on other devices - for phone calls on iPad and Mac computer logged in with same Apple ID. 

Ask Siri to make calls to people in your Contacts

Group email lists cannot be made on iPhone or iPad - make groups on your Mac computer or Windows computer. Copy all the email addresses separated by comma to a Notes page. Copy all the addresses from the Notes page to the BCC field of an email message, type your message in the body of the email and send. 

Settings > Phone > WiFi Calling - when your cellular service is spotty then calls can use local wifi to boost signal.

Message app

Send a new message > tap top right button to address Message by name or phone number > tap blue arrow to send.

• Apple devices are colored blue; non-Apple devices are colored green.
• Some special effects will not be sent to non-Apple devices.
• iPhone shows green? Settings > Messages > Send as SMS > ON
• Settings > Messages > MMS Messaging > ON
• Apple Messages to other Apple users are fully encrypted.
• Add emphasis to message > hold down on blue button for Send with Effect options > Bubble Tap rainbow flower button to send a photo or take a photo.
• New Message > Addressee > tap Rainbow Flower or Camera icon to see photo albums. Tap photo to see a checkbox on the photo.
• When you receive a message with a photo you can use the Share button to Save to Photos.

Many features are buttons above the keyboard, swipe right to left. These options depend on apps you have installed on your iPhone.

• Send Money - with ApplePay button. (PS - Tom has still not sent me money.) 
• Special Words - Happy Birthday, Congratulations and Happy New Year include automatic effects.
• Look for red button above the keyboard Photo Search and type keywords to find fun images for birthdays, holidays, congratulations …
• Look for YouTube button above the keyboard and search for snippets to send. 

Contacts app

Enter Area Codes for all contacts.

Contacts is a reference for other apps, Mail, Messages, Phone, Maps …

Add a new Contact with the + sign and fill in related fields. Like Birthday for a reminder a week before the anniversary.

Related name field for family members and business associates.

Add Ringtone

Add to Favorites - Phone app > tap Star icon to see list

Add Notes - info for reference

Make update to a Contact card - tap Edit.

Add a photo to Contact card

Share Contacts - make a reduced info Contact Card for sharing with others.

Manage Contacts by contextual awareness

Get a phone call from a number > tap ( i ) button to create a new contact card or add to an existing card.

Email from someone > tap the email name/address to add a new contact.

Email message with event information can be added to Calendar app as new event.

Questions 

Sending Messages on iPad are problematic but iPhone sends OK. Settings on iPhone controls Messages. Settings > ... mystery continues 

Photos changes in iOS 14 - sending a picture … The several ways to send photos is confusing. From Messages or from Photos app. Read the User Guide to find out the different ways to send photos. Choose the best approach for you. 

Can’t find the Cancel button to stop the Share option. So I shut off my iPhone. You are working too hard. Swipe up on the screen to return to a Home Screen (Face ID). Swipe up slowly to activate the Multitasking view and then swipe up on the misbehaving app to close it. Tap the Home Button to return to a Home Screen (Home Button model). Swipe up slowly to activate the Multitasking view and then swipe up on the misbehaving app to close it. 

Many websites are open on my iPhone. Can I dismiss all at once? Touch and hold bottom right icon with two boxes. Option to close all tabs. There is no lag time in using Safari if many tabs are open. They are dormant unless they are the front-most tab.

iPhone Basics - Day 3 - Maps & Security

Maps: Let Your Fingers Do the (COVID) Traveling

With all real, interesting traveling precluded by the pandemic, you can have some fun and get ready for a return to great trips with the Maps app on your phone (it’s also on iPad). Play around, explore and practice and you’ll be adept for our normal future.

First, open Maps in Settings. You want to have Location turned on, either While Using the App or While Using the App or Widgets. You also want to have Precise Location turned on so you get good directions. When you are not on WiFi, you want to have Cellular Data turned on. You can keep cellular data on all the time if you have an unlimited plan. If your plan is limited you can keep it off but perhaps turn it on when you really need it someplace.

Open Maps. Your current location will be in the center of the map, a blue pulsing circle. If it’s not (or to return at any time to your location), click on the pointed arrow at the top right.

At the bottom right is the temperature and the Air Quality Index.

Tap the i with a circle around it at the top right. You can choose map settings: Map, Transit or Satellite. Traffic or not. With traffic on, when you look at the map, especially when planning a trip or route, on highways and streets you will see slowdowns in red, accidents, road construction and lane closures.

The top of the map is North by default. If you move around your map so it is not, a round compass will appear under the arrow. Tap on the compass to get North back on the top.

Use your two fingers to move around and drag the map. To zoom in or out, pinch in or out. It will show the scale in the upper left as you zoom. You can zoom really far out and see the entire country or even the whole world.

Turn on Satellite and you will see 3D by the arrow. Tap on that. Rotate and move with your fingers to get closeup 3D looks. Tap 2D to go back.

For directions, tap in the search bar, usually at the bottom, and type the city or place where you want to go. The map will show it and offer you directions for your choice of car, walk, transit or ride-share.  It tells you how many miles it is and gives estimated travel times (these vary with the traffic; to test this try one route in the middle of the night and the same route at rush hour!). It often will give you several route choices, its preferred one in bright blue. Just tap on a light blue route if you want to consider that. You can also choose to have a route that avoids tolls and/or highways.

Be sure your home address is in your Contacts and is labeled as your home. Then when you want directions from some place to your home, the map immediately knows where to go!

There are lots of things you can have fun searching for: landmarks, parks, beaches, places you might want to visit, addresses or towns where you lived a long time ago, old addresses of your parents or even grandparents. 

Look for places where it says Look Inside, such as a shopping mall like Arden Fair or an airport. It will show you all the shops and where they are in the building.  You can get details on the various stores, and restaurants, including hours, phone number, website and which ones take Apple Pay and often photos. In bigger cities like San Francisco, you can get lots of pictures when you see Look Around. In some cities or places you will see a binocular symbol. Tap on that to get 360-degree views of a street or attraction. Note that license plates and faces are blurred for privacy.

You can use Siri to search for something, like the Golden Gate Bridge. Or type it in. You can search by specific address, by intersection, by area, by landmark, by Zip code, for kinds of businesses or categories like gas station or coffee shops or hardware stores. 

You can mark places with pins to help you find those places later. Press down. And you can look at the bottom of search cards (under your searches)  to add places to your Favorites.

New in iOS 14:

There are guides from what Apple calls trusted brands and partners in this country and around the world. Just type Guides in the search bar at home or when you’re somewhere else or have open a different place where you want to go on a trip. You’ll get some choices of various attractions in that area. You can save them. Tap on a pick, then tap on Save Guide. You can also share these guides.

You can now set up electric vehicle routing in Maps. You need to download your vehicle’s app that includes EV routing. You need a compatible vehicle (not sure if there are many yet).

When you’re using Maps in your car for routing, it will show alerts for speed and red-light cameras. 

There are supposed to be bike directions for selected cities, but Sacramento is not one of them yet.

Bad guys just want to get hold of your money … your personal information … they try to get your info by coercion - getting you to give up information. Email is their tool.

Email - Unsubscribe from mailing list could be at the top of a message or at the bottom of a message. Some messages include an option at the top of the screen to Unsubscribe for the mailing list. if you know the company sending the emails then use this option. If you do not know the source of the email - then unsubscribing is a way to tell nerfarious people that your email is a current active email list.

Move messages to Junk … when viewing the content of an email message look for the back arrow icon to see all the options for a message.

Apple apps do not sell information about you to other companies to market products with ads.

Download new apps from App Store, aka 3rd Party Developers, once developers have updated for iOS 14 include information on App Privacy with Data Linked to You …

Settings > Privacy >> where you control downloaded apps information on you

> Location Services > by app to set While Using or Ask or Never or Ask Next Time

Often ads pop up when surfing the web because our information has been collected by an app and passed (“sold”) to digital marketing companies.

Email - some messages pretend to be a reputable company. Touch the From to see the full address of the sender. Beware of clicking links in emails that you do not expect

Day 2 Agenda - Control Panel - Manage Home Screen & Widgets - App Library

Close apps to pause them. Camera is on, but go to a Home Screen to close Camera.

Control Center 

• Home Button model - Swipe up from the bottom, close with chevron at top
• Face ID model - Swipe down from top right corner
• Top panels have an invisible line- upper controls are preset, lower controls are user customizable. Buttons are toggles - on / off
• Easy access instead of opening Settings for controls.
• Left Top Communications: Airplane Mode - turns off cellular, wifi antennas; Bluetooth remains on for headphones … Use this mode to save battery power.
• Cellular Data - foreign travel
• Wifi - turn off wifi
• Bluetooth -
• Right Top: Music controls & Bluetooth speaker control
• Paddlelock for screen lock - Mail can be viewed on iPhone in portrait or landscape orientation.
• Half Moon - Do Not Disturb > Silence; TOUCH AND HOLD to reveal options for silence

• TOUCH AND HOLD for Communications and for Do Not Disturb - Close by taping outside the box. Brightness - turn on Dark Mode & Night Shift.

• Flashlight - uses up battery power, TOUCH & HOLD to set brightness
• Calculator - opens Calculator app (turn horizontal orientation to see more functions)

CUSTOMIZE YOUR CONTROL CENTER

• Settings > Control Center > to manage what features/buttons are available
• Access Within Apps > On;
• Red buttons and Green buttons (these show up in other places on you iPhone) - Touch Green circle to move control up to active list.
• Included Controls have Red circle - Remove (to move below to More Controls)
• Text Size, Notes … explore based on your interests and needs
• 3-LINES icon on lists allows you to change the order of the list. TOUCH AND DRAG to change the order
• Camera TOUCH & HOLD for camera modes
• Text Size Control Center button - open Mail and Messages app to see text at the new size.
• Do Not Disturb and still getting alerts. Phone app will allow calls from Favorites. Move the left side Ring/Silent switch to show red color.
• Play with the Sound Recognition Control button.
• Screen Recording allows you to create a video of all actions on the screen. Gamers might use this or teachers. Average users won’t need this feature.

MANAGING HOME SCREEN

• WIDGETS - Clock, Calendar, Battery level, Weather … for information without opening an app.
• Not every app has a Widget view.
• Hold finger on any open space on the Home Screen - apps wiggle. Top corner has a (+), Home Screen
• Tap (+) for suggested Widgets, scroll down the page. Three sizes of Widgets. Tap the Maps to see options - small, medium and large > Add Widget > still in wiggle mode > TOUCH & DRAG to move Widget box as app icons move aside. Stop wiggling by pressing Home Button or tap Done in upper right corner.
• Tap on a Widget to open the full app. Stocks widget added. Get into wiggle mode > tap (-) on Stocks app to see options > Remove from Home Screen.
• Can add Widgets to any Home Screen.
• Make a FOLDER for related apps, TAP & DRAG one app on top of another app.
• If a widget has dots on the right side it is a SMART STACK and could show many apps . Explore. Read the User Guide. Play.
• Clean up app icons. Get into Wiggle mode, tap ( - ) > Remove from Home Screen. While apps are wiggling, TOUCH AND DRAG to move app icons to different positions.
• HIDE HOME SCREEN - get into wiggle mode, above the Dock is an oval with dots. TAP the oval to see HOME SCREEN thumbnails. Tap the circle at the bottom

APP LIBRARY is the last Home Screen (swipe right to left) - Collections of apps that are curated by Apple. This screen has a SEARCH at the top. Type a few letters to see filtered list of app names. Review list in alpha order. TAP & HOLD to see options with > Add to Home Screen!

• Adjust the app icons, widgets and Home Screens for your use at home, while traveling or other special activities. 
• Siri can open apps: "Open Calculator app"
• Swipe down on empty space on the Home Screen to open Search. Type just a few letters to see suggestions for apps and websites.

Don't let your view of apps and Home Screens be static! Adjust the views and order of apps depending on your activities.

Multitasking view of paused apps - are they using power? It depends! Some apps work great in the background, like Music. But Maps is an app that uses GPS and in the background will be using battery to keep track of current location.

Group 1 - Airplane Mode is a TOGGLE for on/off - turns off the radios (cellular, wifi*, bluetooth, NFC - near-field-communications (Apple Pay), GPS for satellite location.

*WiFi - might have a paddle lock icon to indicate it is password protected. Range could be 100 yards if clear line of site but walls can interfere with connection.
Bluetooth is a technology that connects devices - speakers, car audio system for hands-free phone calls, smart watches, AirPods, blood pressure monitor, scale, printer, Tesla car …  operates within 30 feet.

One Car’s bluetooth speakers can include multiple iPhone devices, but only one is active for map navigation and hands-free calling at a time.

Why do you want a personal hot spot - feature that adds costs to your Cellular service - iPhone can be an intermediary to allow a wifi iPad or computer to use your Hot Spot to connect to the Internet. Limited data for cellular service - do not use for watching movies or streaming content.  

Are you getting a new iPhone? Are you planning to travel abroad? Get an unlocked iPhone - that is not tied to a cellular plan. The you can purchase a SIM card for phone calls and data in a foreign country.

WiFi Calling - might add an extender in your home for those rooms with poor coverage (no bars).

Settings > General > About > Software version 14.4 … Capacity, Available space
Change the name of your iPhone - make it personal. Then go back to your car and delete previous phones and add your newly named iPhone. 

Settings > General > Software Update - update in the evening/night while on wifi.

Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Memory and Storage - How much memory is included when purchasing your iPhone  from 64GB, 256GB, 500GB.

Settings > General > Background App Refresh - can turn off or on then select apps to allow working in the background.

Settings > Battery > to see apps using battery …
10 hours of operation but over time they degrade and will not recharge to full as when new.
Battery Health > Maximum Capacity …  
At some point, replacing a battery is expensive and in an old iPhone that will no longer update the iOS for security

Settings > Notifications > pop up … Messages > check all options. Apps appearing on this list depend on the installed apps

Settings > Sounds & Haptics > explore on your own or by reading the User Guide
Settings > Do Not Disturb > on/off/ or set schedule …  

Lengthen the time before entering your passcode Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock > 5 minutes or less on the phone. Must use Fingerprint ID or Face ID to unlock and use device.

If my iPhone is OFF - and new emails or messages have been sent to you when you power the phone back on will the messages and emails come in? Yes, if you have a cellular connection or are on wifi.

New Semester ... same steps

In preparing for the Spring 2021 semester, it is comforting to see that some of the information we shared in the past is still current and useful. For example, Zoom Classes - Save to Notes is a detailed page from September 8, 2020, back when iOS 13.7 was up-to-date. Now we are at iOS 14.4 and on the cusp of another update. 

RenSoc has worked to make tracking your Zoom seminars, forums and pop-ups even easier by collecting them all in an email sent to you from the registration system. You might save the entire list from the email message to a Notes page, and even better, take the next step of creating Calendar events for each one with the Zoom URL included. Voila! Tom Holt opened the meeting today emphasizing we will be using iOS 14 - the current operating system version for iPhones. He also noted that in late 2021, iOS 15 will be available and older iPhones will not be able to update. That means no additional protection from updated security features. Read this 9 to 5 Mac article about compatible devices for iOS 15.  

Goal: Learn things to help you take advantage of your iPhone. (Share what you learn with friends and family to reinforce your learning.)

Our website is where you can find notes from each session. Also past sessions over the last five years. Melissa suggested taking shorthand notes - terminology or brief activity reference - then use the website to read the details and follow the steps. This is a new language, we are building brain power by attending this seminar and working with technology. So relax, observe and jot a word down. If you try to transcribe the actions on screen you will get left behind. Come early to ask questions or stay late to ask questions. Actually, even if you don't have a question, come early/stay late because the topics others ask will fill-in gaps for you or your friends.

Tom's presentation ended with a QR Code - a quick response barcode - to open iOS Basics website on your iOS device. When you see a QR Code, wake up your iPhone, open the Apple Camera app and point it at the boxy graphic, get close (not too close) and watch for a notification to appear at the top of your screen with the option to TAP your finger so Safari will open the webpage (or take another QR action). You are not taking a picture! You are just pointing the camera at the boxy graphic so your hand-held computer can translate the graphic into something real.
